FIVE REASONS DONORS LEAVE A GIFT IN THEIR WILL
Because they want to:
- Create a personal legacy that acts as a catalyst for positive change;
- Begin, or honour, a strong family tradition of charitable giving;
- Provide ongoing, stable support for the charities that have made a difference in their lives;
- Maintain control of assets until their death to ensure flexibility in coming years to cover unexpected medical or other costs;
- Retain the ability to change the beneficiaries of their gift if interests or needs change over time;
- Significantly reduce the taxes owed by their estate upon death.
A bequest is only a few lines of text in a will – but it can create a whole world of positive change.

Funds gifted by bequest to Tides Canada are invested in businesses and institutions whose practices are as consistent as possible with our mission to support social justice and environmental protection.
Make a bequest to Tides Canada
Leaving an unrestricted gift to Tides Canada is a great way to support a wide range of social change initiatives. Our work is broad and constantly evolving, including:
- making high-impact grants to leading environmental and social justice charities;
- bringing leaders in social change together to learn from each other;
- promoting a regulatory framework that allows for greater innovation within the charitable sector.
Unrestricted gifts will support all of these crucial, complementary areas.
Donors can also specify that a bequest go to one of our Field of Interest Funds. These funds are directed by Tides Canada staff who work with expert advisors across the country to identify and support leading charities.
Tides Canada Social Justice Fund: This fund supports innovative, entrepreneurial Canadian charities working on a wide range of initiatives that promote more broadly shared economic opportunity, robust and inclusive democratic process, respect for human rights, and cultural diversity.
Tides Canada Environment Fund: Always monitoring the shifting landscape of opportunities, this fund supports a diversity of initiatives that promote respect for and protection of the natural and environmental legacy that sustains our rural and urban quality of life.
Create a personalized Legacy Fund with a bequest
A personalized Legacy Fund can be set up in a will, to take effect upon a donor’s death. Many donors choose this option because it gives them the most direct say in how grants are made from their Fund beyond their lifetime.
With a Legacy Fund, the principal (the gift left in the will) is invested in perpetuity. Grants are made from the earnings, according to the criteria laid out by the donor during his or her lifetime.
Donors can choose to specify a particular charity or charities to support in perpetuity, or define an issue area that is important to them and have Tides Canada seek out the most innovative charities working within that area as grant recipients from their fund.
Alternately, donors can designate a family member or friend as advisor to their fund, and he or she can remain closely involved, recommending grants to be made from the earnings, and partnering with Tides Canada to stay abreast of emerging trends and community needs.
Tides Canada can also administer a scholarship program from a Legacy Fund. If this option is of interest please be sure to consult with us, as this type of fund can be complex to set up and administer.
Support a Charity’s Endowment held at Tides Canada
Tides Canada manages a growing number of Endowment Funds established by registered charities to help them grow long-term, sustainable funding.
Bequests can be directed to those specific funds, or a specialized fund can be created in a will. If the charity the fund supports is no longer in operation at the time the bequest becomes active, the purpose statement of the fund ensures that contributions will go to leading related charities.
Investments that align with your values
Increasingly, thoughtful donors are recognizing that charitable donations are only part of the process of supporting positive change. Harmonizing a donor’s values with the way their charitable dollars are invested in the marketplace creates an even greater impact.
At Tides Canada, our funds are invested in businesses and institutions whose practices are as consistent as possible with our shared mission to support social justice and environmental protection.
Doing this means that we are making solid financial investments while also being part of a movement steering publicly-traded businesses towards greater social and environmental responsibility.
The basic tenets of our mission-based investing include screening, shareholder advocacy, economically targeted investments and social venture capital.
